Euthanasia
If your cat or dog is sick or in pain, having them put down can be the most loving and difficult decision you can make. At Hôpital vétérinaire des Trois-Lacs, we know how hard this can be, and our team is here for you every step of the way. Our animal health professionals can offer advice and answer any questions you have so your pet can be euthanized as humanely as possible.
How are pets euthanized?
Many pet owners worry that their furry friend will suffer during the procedure. There’s no need for concern—euthanasia provides relief for your pet when there are no other options for them. This procedure is a painless, peaceful way for your pet to go.
When it’s time to euthanize your cat or dog, we place them in a room where you can be with them. We give them a sedative to help them settle down and stay relaxed throughout the procedure.
Once your pet is completely calm and no longer feels any pain, we put in a catheter so we can inject the euthanasia medication that will gently stop their heart.
Can I be with my pet when they’re being euthanized?
Of course. Having you there will be good for them. You can offer them calm and comfort and help them stay relaxed throughout the procedure. And it’s a chance for you to be by their side and say goodbye.
But we understand if you find this too hard to do. It’s not easy and you’re under no obligation. If you decide not to be in the room with them, someone on our team will stay with your cat or dog the whole time. Of course, we’ll give you a few moments beforehand to say goodbye.
