Why is it so important to have my pet spayed or neutered?
There are many good reasons to have your pet sterilized. First, it helps control cat and dog overpopulation. It also helps minimize the risk of certain diseases of the reproductive system and reduce behavioural issues related to the reproductive cycle.
What does cat and dog spaying and neutering involve?
Sterilization is a surgical procedure meant to make pets infertile. To do that, we cut or remove certain parts of their reproductive organs. The operation varies depending on your pet’s sex.
In male cats and dogs, the surgery is called neutering and consists of a skin incision to remove their testicles.
Surgery on female cats or dogs is commonly known as spaying (ovariohysterectomy), where the ovaries and uterus are completely removed.
What’s the best age to sterilize my cat or dog?
The best age to have your cat spayed or neutered is around 5 to 6 months. For dogs, the age depends on the size and breed but is around 6 months. If your dog is a large breed, we suggest waiting a bit longer. Please speak to your vet. But keep in mind: although there’s an ideal age to have your pet sterilized, it’s never too late.
